The moment everybody has been waiting for, the official results for this year’s Hottest Female R&B artists. To remind everybody this list was determined by two factors, that was the Def Pen Radio staff and the fans weighed in as well. We based things on talent, impact, relevancy over the last year. We at Def Pen Radio want to thank everybody who voted and made this a complete success. Discuss the results below in the comment area. No holds barred!
1. Beyonce

Do we even need to get in detail why Mrs Carter made it to the very top? One of the main reason is simply the impact “Single Ladies” had. Countless videos on YouTube and the awards the song has won are just two signs why “Single Ladies” is the song of the past months. But we don’t want to discuss one single song here because Beyonce won this competition. Beyonce – the talented perfectionist, the outstanding performer, the hardworking business woman, the amazing vocalist, the classy diva but humble and private person… There are many other attributes we could add but by now it should be clear why we have chosen her.

2. Mariah Carey

There is and there will be only one Mariah Carey. A person who has fascinated people around the globe since two decades. Especially the 90s Mariah did show us how talented she is, it’s hard to find a voice like hers. Nobody else seems to be so focused when it comes to vocals (let’s forget about some of her current live performances). It’s amazing to listen to her records and to notice how many different layers her songs have. Another thing that many actually do forget is her talent to write songs. Mariah Carey is a great songwriter and many of her songs helped people who struggled. In 2009 Mariah released her 12th studio album which contained great quality but unfortunately it wasn’t as successful chartwise as everybody hoped.

3. Alicia Keys

The one with the piano. There’s probably no Alicia Keys video without a piano in it, although it might look random sometimes. But that’s not the point. Alicia Keys may not have the best range but the emotions she puts into her songs makes that irrelevant. Additionally, she always keeps it classy and produces one hit (album) after another.

Rihanna is back like she never left, well actually she didn’t. In what has been a much publicized year for her, even without releasing new material she remained to be the talk of the town. Overcoming in what she’s calling an embarrassing experience with her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown, Rihanna is back to release her “movie album” entitled Rated R. With the singles “Russian Roulette” & “Hard” which features her label mate Young Jeezy is already dominating the charts. This is a movie you don’t want to miss folks, oh yeah view discretion is advised.

“The Voice” may be the singer that most young artists describe as their idol when it comes to vocals because Whitney Houston is really one of a kind when it comes to vocals. Her classic songs shaped the late 80s-early 90s. This year Whitney came finally back with positive news after the years before were only about her marriage to Bobby Brown. Her long awaited comeback album “I Look To You” was a success and a step in the right direction.

“The Iconic Entertainer” Janet Jackson lays the foundation for everyone on this list when it comes to being a complete artist. The consistency remains and her fan base is not too far behind. Losing her beloved brother Michael Jackson, she remains to keep strong, and that’s evident from the BET Tribute where she opened up. Speaking of which she will be opening up the American Music Awards this year.

The Toronto born singer may not be the biggest star yet but her lovely personality and her talent justify her position. Her soulful voice makes you enjoy her debut album “The Bridge” which was finally released in the US. If you haven’t known her yet and you like to support real artists who are actually talented it’s time for you to check her out. We can only hope that people will understand how great this lady is and that she won’t be categorized under “underrated” for too long.
