Def Pen Radio Interview: Vanessa Veasley

June 16, 2009 by Ducketz
Filed under Breaking News, EYE CANDY

We finally caught up with Vanessa Veasley, I’m pretty sure you’ve seen her everywhere from some of your favorite artists videos to all the top eye candy publications. She is also the editor of Show Magazine. Checkout this Def Pen Radio exclusive interview

Def Pen Radio finally got a hold of Vanessa Veasley (laughs), how
everything going with you?

Great! Thanks [Laughing] I know, I’ve been hard to catch these days…

Let the readers of DefPenRadio.com know who Vanessa Veasley is in 5 words?

Model, Editor, Nerd, Traveler, Superhero

How did you get introduced to modeling?

When I was younger, my mother introduced me to modeling along with a dozen other activities(every instrument and dance class available) to keep me busy and out of trouble. I had a pretty short attention span, but modeling stuck. After I moved to Georgia to attend Clack Atlanta University, I gained my freshman 15 and filled out. Rather than fight the thickness, I embraced it and, it made me eligible for glamour, urban, and bikini modeling.

You’ve done a few music videos, Lil Wayne’s Lolipop, The Game “Wouldn’t Get Far, JD Chris Brown’s Gimmie That, and Kanye West’s “Amazing”….is that something you will continue to do or you pretty much done with being a “video vixen” and what was that experience for you?

I’ve been blessed to work on great sets with the most talented directors and artists in the game. I’ve meet some of my best homegirls working on video sets, and have never had a personal experience that soured my view of working on music videos. You always hear accomplished models say the have “retired” from appearing in videos, then you turn around and see them in another one, so I won’t do that to myself. But the industry isn’t like it used to be. Production companies don’t have budgets like they used to. A “good look” in a video is no substitute for a good paycheck so I turn down more offers now then I used to.

If I am specifically requested, the money is right, I like the treatment and want to work with that artist/director, then you will see me in it! I most recently featured alongside of Dollicia Bryant(XXL’s Eyecandy of the year) in the Willy Northpole feat Bobby Valentino video “#1 Side Chick” Directed by Taj which should be out soon. Check for me…

Other than the videos I just mentioned where else may have people seen you?

King, XXL, Smooth Girl, SHOW, Urban Ink, SHOWCase Girls of Lowrider, and many other mags…

From the videos to the magazines what part of modeling is the most exciting for you?

I love hosting parties, events and model searches. It’s a way for me to travel and really connect with my fans and make new ones. Anyone that’s been to an event I’ve hosted or met me at a party or auto show will tell you I’m the girl-next-door. I’m not a princess that shows up with a bunch of unnecessary security and hides in VIP texting on her phone the whole night. I mix it up on the dance floor, I like to meet aspiring models, and I stay until every mag is signed and every picture is taken. I am approachable and have fun with it!

The modeling is a very competitive industry what advice would you give to a lets say a 17 year old female who is thinking about pursuing modeling full time?

Not only is the industry competitive, it is also over saturated, and over populated with too many “managers”, “agents”, and “publicists” who prey on girls that do not do their research before deciding they want to do this.

I would tell that 17 year old girl to pursue her education full-time. If modeling is truly your passion, go for it as well! However, do your research first and approach it with the same level of professionalism that you would an executive position at an office. Hard work, punctuality, and a good attitude are rewarded in this business, not sleeping with the right people(despite what you are led to believe). Longevity and respect do not come overnight. Be patient and persistent and never let others change your goals for you.

You are currently on the new cover of SHOWCase(Show Magazine) which is on stands now, you also are the editor over there, how did that position come about?

I’ve been a part of SHOW in one way or another since the beginning. I featured in the first issue, had a cover for SHOW Black Lingerie #4, and I’ve been one of the most requested models with on of the most downloaded pictures in the company’s history. I always worked to bring the SHOW Girls together to host events and work promotions.

Last year, finally ready to do something with my background in Public Relations, I came aboard with an official title as Managing Editor, and have since been promoted to Editor. It was an exciting yet tough transition at first running an office and not loosing the free-spirited model that got me here, but I’ve found my balance…

Aside from modeling what are some other fields you would like to pursue or may currently be pursuing, maybe full time acting?

As I mentioned before, I LOVE to travel. So I would love to host or produce my own travel show.

I read that you like to travel alot and one place I found pretty interesting is you want to actually travel to space tell me more about that?

Since I was little I’ve been obsessed with sci-fi, comic books, and most of all space, theoretical physics, and cosmology. I remember I did a report on Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time in 8th grade(such a nerd lol). I would love to travel beyond the Earth’s orbit one day. I once heard an astronaut describe holding up his thumb and blocking out the Earth with it. That’s insane! So hopefully they will keep working hard to make commercial flights safe and affordable, and I will work hard to get this paper. Maybe we can make it happen for my 50th birthday! [Laughing]

Being that you love traveling and of course you travel alot for business what are 5 things you MUST have on the road?

1. My iPod Touch
2. Sneakers(so I can hit the treadmill after all the fatty room service)
3. White Barn Candle Co.’s Home Spray in Mango Mandarin
4. A good book(currently reading Freakanomics by Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner)
5. My ugly lime green satin pillow case

Growing up in Philly you had to grow up on alot of music with artists like The Roots, Musiq Soulchild, Santigold all being from Philly what’s
currently playing in your ipod?

Well those are all pretty new artists, and while I have them all on my iPod I didn’t grow up to them. My father is a Jazz musician and growing up my brother was a House/Hip-Hop DJ, and my mother loves Vocalists, Folk, and Classical music. So I knew appreciated, and grew to love all types of music. Now My iPod is filled with everything from Santogold, Jamariquai, Cinematic Orchestra, and Bob Marley, to James Taylor and Stevie Wonder, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone, to Jay Z, Kanye West, and Drake.

Lets dip into the personal side just a bit, what’s your current relationship status?

I’m single. I do enjoy being in a relationship though. I like the freedom of a relationship. Being able to let your guard down, trust and grow with someone, try new things, and be with someone that has really learned and mastered your body. Anything less than that is a waste of time for me at this point in my life, so my version of single goes hand in hand with boredom and celibacy. [Laughing]

What type of guys are you attracted to?

I love creative, brilliant, sometimes eccentric men. I have a strong personality, so he has to have one too; but just with a more laid back energy that balances mine. I like a manly man with a touch of mama’s boy in him. He had to be able to hold his own and get respect from hood dudes, and clean up nice for a black tie event. Most importantly he has to be my friend, keep my secrets, and care about my interests and future, not just see me as a piece of arm candy. Sounds like I’m putting in an order doesn’t it? [Laughing]

What’s been the craziest thing a guy’s done to get your attention?

Let’s not go there! [Laughing] The craziest stories would give away who it was if I told you. They involve unnecessary flossing, which is cute when you’re 18, but it takes much more to woo me now.

What’s the status on VanessaVeasley.com and what can the people expect?

Right now I have a dope ass flash page up. Check it out! I’m in the process of rebuilding my site. I took it down last year but my fans are encouraging me to get one back up. This time I want to make sure I put a lot of my own personality into it so I will be motivated to keep updating and promoting it.

From the your site you’re launching to being editor what else can the people lookout for?

Man, I always have something if not three things going on. Check me out in the July/August issue of Lowrider Girls which is on stands right now. For all things SHOW related check out: www.showgirlzexclusive.com, and follow me on Twitter (@VanessaVeasley) and I will keep you posted on all my adventures!

We definitely have to do Pt.2 real soon, before we end this interview is there anything you want to say?

I just want to thank DefPen for taking the time to interview me, and thank whoever is reading this for taking the time to get to know a little more about me. The best is yet to come!

After that the Google searches began lol and from there Milani Rose has been a constant vision in my head.

Aside from that I have a huge amount of respect for her because she overcame alot over the past few months, it takes a real female to overcome her past. An exclusive interview with Ms. Rose is coming soon keep it locked!!!! Also be sure to checkout MilaniRoseOnline.com
