New Phone Prototype Called “The Con”

Designers trying to build the next great portable multimedia player are finding it pretty hard to get away from the spectre of the iPhone’s success and the latest example can be seen in Sean Haller’s attractive new prototype, called ‘The Con.’
The Con includes a touchscreen display (surrounded by a carbon fiber case), uses an Apple OS, and includes detachable and programmable buttons (possibly like the Maximus Optimus Keyboard?).
What’s best though, is the embedded (and large) convertible screen that slides out from a slot like an accordion (or a map folded vertically in sections) and is made out of solid-state LCD panels. This addition is potentially important because it solves the annoying problem of watching epic-style movies on a tiny screen — a detail that other companies like Microvision are trying to fix with embedded projectors. (Jon Stewart famously mocked the iPhone’s small screen as well, at this year’s Oscars.)
I saw a prototype of the projection technology at this year’s CES and while I was impressed by the possibilities of a nicely rendered projection, the current resolution results (and the image’s brightness) still need a lot of work, and this opens up the market for new ideas like the panel in ‘The Con.’
