INTERVIEW:CHEY N

Ducketz sits down with Chey to speak on her up coming street album “DEFinition of Chey N,her new position at a label,and why she buzzin more than Obama

-Chey whats up…..everything good?

Chey N:Hey Hey, everythings bueno can’t complain ;o)

-Your buzz is crazy right now how you feel about that?

Chey N:Blessed! I’ve been grindin since I was 14 so to finally have people behind me is amazing. I have to pinch myself sometimes when I go through messages from my fans and see how much they love the records and how much they really are pushing me to change the game. Cause for so long, the industry was trynna get me to fit in a box. So its nice to be accepted for bringing somethin new.

-So for those who don’t know where are you from?

Chey N:I was born in NY. But I came up in between the UK and the tri state back and forth.

-People always ask me is she mix with something (laughs) let the people know alittle about your background.

Chey N:Hahah they ask me all the time too.. I’m mixed with a bit of everything but I consider myself black

-Now most artist only have local buzz but you have a pretty huge fanbase oversees….how was you able to establish that.

Chey N:Comin up in between Sheffield and NY…I’ve always had a connection with music overseas. So when I finally came with this project after being away for a few years alot of my fam jumped behind it 100%. From Sniper to the Dumpe Fresh clique to Charlie Sloth, and DonEBlaze, one of the Mitchell Bros even reached out…Havin their support really helped me bridge the gap to the fans. The fans over there are amazing… probably the most support I get is outta France and the UK.

-Now your music is definitely something thats very unique….what catergory would you put your music in if any?

Chey N:Hmmm you know…its really hard to define my music cause its something new… but if I had to put it in a category I would def say its a mixture of pop hiphop and soul.

-What do you plan to bring different to the music industry?

Chey N:I see myself bringing back individuality, we have so much of the same sound going on right now. There are very few artist that stand out from the crowd. And when you look back on the greatest artist of all time Madonna, Prince, just to name two, they’ve always been the ones who were willing to break the mold…People forget that when acts like Madonna and Prince first came out no one wanted to touch them. They boo-ed the hell outta Prince when he opened for the rolling stones but if you have the drive… Eventually the world starts to appreciate what your creating and thats really my goal.

-Speaking of the industry what do you think the problem is with record sales today

Chey N:Well we are all so extra focused on hype right now alot of artist tend to fall into the trap of loading their records up with too many features. So we’ve kind of lost out on fans loving an artist just for them, cause a new artist cant really shine behind all these other big names they put on their songs. If you cant get people to understand your story and your style then they are DEF not going to feel like they want to support you and go cop your CD. Its too easy to download music.

-Also you got a HUGE postion at a company but we won’t speak about that just yet (laughs)

Chey N:Haha well the secrets leaking out slowly. But they’ll know soon enough (winks) I’ll just say this: watch for the new chick on staff over at Def Pen Music Group I heard she’s a boss

-Currently what projects are you working on?

Chey N:Man I have soooo much that I am working on right now it makes my head spin! Lol. But I’m really focused on dropping The Definition of Chey.N in May… thats my baby. We’ve had to push it back a little bit, I wanted it out in April but I also had to make sure the music was tight and now its IS! So I’m really really excited to get that album out to my fans and show them how much I’ve grown since Cheeky Pop. Once that drops you’ll really be able to see the domino effect with all my other projects.

-When is the first single dropping?

Chey N:We’re shooting for the tail end of April
